According to the U.S. EPA, "volatile organic compounds (VOC's) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOC's include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOC's are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors." In addition, VOC's are a contributing factor to ozone, a common air pollutant. Health risks depend upon how much is in the air and the frequency in which it is breathed. Learn more about low VOC and low odor.
Paint must be applied to clean, sound surfaces. Clean and dry surface thoroughly, removing all dirt, dust, chalk, rust, grease, wax, and mildew. Bare Wood: Remove sap by scraping and scrubbing with mineral spirits. Let dry. Coat knots and sappy areas with exterior stain blocking primer before applying topcoat. Follow all label instructions. Painted Wood: scrape off loose and peeling paint. Sand and then prime. Surfaces with many layers of old, brittle paint may require complete removal of the previous coats prior to repainting. Thoroughly remove chalk by vigorous washing, with a non-residue cleaner, such as tri sodium phosphate (TSP), then rinse well and dry. Wire brush under eaves and porch ceilings to remove invisible residues and increase adhesion in these areas. Dull glossy surfaces with gloss remover or sandpaper. Countersink nails and spot prime nail heads with metal primer. When dry, fill with putty. Caulk cracks and open joints, then prime. Hardboard siding (unprimed, primed, or previously painted): Remove any wax from bleed-through areas by wiping with mineral spirits, turning the rag over to avoid spreading the wax around. Danger! Rags, steel wood, or waste soaked with mineral spirits may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Immediately after each use, place rags, steel wood or waste in a sealed, water-filled metal container. Dispose of according to local regulations. Masonry: Wire brush loose material from chalking areas on concrete, brick and concrete blocks. Metal: Remove rust on galvanized gutters and spot prime with metal primer. On new galvanized surfaces, allow to age six months before painting, or clean with mild muriatic acid solution. On other unpainted ferrous metal surfaces, remove rust, wipe clean with mineral spirits and primer with metal primer.
This paint contains ingredients that help resist mildew growth on dry paint film. Mildew is a fungus that looks like dirt but won't wash off. Mildew must be removed before painting or it will grow through any new coat of paint. To remove mildew, scrub house before painting with a commercial mildew remover or a solution of 1 part liquid chlorine bleach to 3 parts of water. Rinse thoroughly. Protect eyes and skin by wearing rubber gloves and eye goggles when working with bleach solution.
If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log onto www.epa.gov/lead.
